This concise little book by Austin Hill and Scott Rae provides a lucid defense of capitalism grounded in examples from modern history. They address many common critiques of capitalism both directly and with sympathy, acknowledging capitalism’s weaknesses and limitations and emphasizing the additional conditions, institutions, and values necessary for capitalism to support a flourishing society. Their perspective is well summarized by a Winston Churchill (mis)quote from their final chapter: “Capitalism is surely the worst economic system, except for all the others that have been tried.”
