Advent is a season of change. For four weeks, we prepare our hearts and minds for the second coming of Christ even as we focus on his first coming as a baby in Bethlehem. The prophets who foretold the first coming of Christ suggested that it would be a time of profound disruption—both welcome and not. Those longing for the coming Messiah looked forward in hope for the coming king who would usher in a new era of peace and long-awaited flourishing for God’s people. Yet the prophets had stern warnings for those who opposed God and oppressed God’s people. The coming Christ would not tolerate their wicked ways.

This Advent season, we will look to the Scriptures to learn about the holy disruption that accompanies the first and second comings of Jesus. We’ll also attend to those places in our lives where we notice change, transition, or disruption—or where we need them.
