God of the Boardroom (Faith & Work Integration, Part 4)
The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign for ever and ever.”
Revelations 11:15
So there I was sitting in a meeting as a member of the Board of Directors for a very prominent national organization. Outwardly I was cool, calm, and collected… inwardly I was a mess. I had accepted the invitation to become a Board Member at the leading of the Holy Spirit, and after much prayer. This was not a Christian organization; in fact many of this corporation’s goals were diametrically opposed to my Christian worldview. Yet, here I was in this meeting because God instructed me to accept membership. We had been alerted that the agenda of this meeting included developing a two-year social justice plan for the organization.
Prior to this meeting, I remember being in prayer and receiving direction from God to write a proposal on a very specific social justice cause. In my mind, this was an exercise in futility because I figured that the organization had a clear vested interest in pursuing other issues. However, I chose obedience over my professional experience, and prepared the proposal. As the chairman opened the meeting, all I had was my proposal, my pen, and my instructions from God. The first hour of the meeting could only be described as the “worst nightmare scenario”. The topics were completely misaligned with my Christian worldview, and my proposal seemed less and less relevant. My mind was racing; desperately trying to remember why I even joined the Board in the first place… and again there was the equally frequent reminder that it was at God’s bidding and for his glory.
And then IT happened! One of my colleagues, who had a vested interest in the topics highlighted thus far, raised his hand to weigh in on the conversation. He began to talk about a very specific topic that was a passion of his…the very same topic that the Holy Spirit had instructed me to write a proposal about. Without hesitation, I presented my proposal to the Board, which then received a unanimous vote and was later implemented over the following two-years. I watched God literally change the hearts and minds of men to be in alignment with his will.
As marketplace ministers and leaders, we have the distinct privilege of knowing the God of the boardroom. This powerful God knows how to manifest his kingdom in the most unexpected places and seasons. God has never needed our witty ideas, our professional context, or even our schemes that compel men to acknowledge him. All he needs are obedient vessels who are willing to take God outside of the box of religious and traditional limitations that we have placed him in. No matter what your profession is, every day is take your God to work day. Why? Because among other things, he is the God of the boardroom.
PRAYER:
God, we desire to see you in new ways. We long to view the demonstration of your power in every place of our lives. Let your glory fill our workspaces, our homes, our recreational places, and our relationships. Equip us with obedient hearts and a spirit of expectation as we endeavor to see the kingdoms of this world become your kingdom. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
