Workday Prayers: God Knows Your Journey
Scripture — Psalm 142:3 (NRSV)
When my spirit is faint,
you know my way.
In the path where I walk,
they have hidden a trap for me.
Look on my right hand and see:
there is no one who takes notice of me;
no refuge remains to me;
no one cares for me.
Focus
When the people you work with are making things hard, when it seems as if nobody cares for you, there is good news. God sees you. God cares for you. God knows your journey. God knows where you’ve been, where you are right now, and where you’re headed. You are not alone. You are deeply and lovingly known.
Prelude
Sometimes in our work we can feel very much alone. The people around us are busy. They care about our usefulness and productivity. But do they care about us? Sometimes people at work do care for us personally. But all too often they don’t. It’s easy to feel, not just alone, but unseen and unloved.
In such times, we are encouraged to remember that God sees us. The Lord knows our “way,” where we’ve been, where we are right now, and where we’re going. Even more wonderfully, the God who knows us also loves us with a love that will never let us go (Romans 8:31-39).
Pray
Gracious God, these days it seems like nobody with whom I work sees me. Oh, they might see me with their eyes, whether we’re in person or in a Zoom meeting. But do they really see me, the human being, not just the productive worker? I often feel invisible at work, and not just invisible, but alone. Does anyone at work actually care about me?
Though I might be ignored by the people in my workplace, I’m not ignored by you, gracious God. You see me. You see where I’ve been, where I am right now, and where I’m going. You see what’s stirring in my heart. You see my hopes and fears, my anger and anguish, my desires and delights. You know everything about me. This means I am not alone. Such good news!
Thank you for seeing me and knowing me, dear Lord. Thank you for being there for me when others turn away. Thank you for loving me even though you see everything in me that is wrong. Thank you for never letting go of me. Thank you for being with me always, to the end of the age. Amen!
