Workday Prayers: Offer Yourself Willingly

By Mark D. Roberts

November 3, 2022

Scripture — Psalm 110:3

Your people will offer themselves willingly
on the day you lead your forces
     on the holy mountains.

Focus

We have the opportunity to offer ourselves willingly to God, to join God in the work of creation, redemption, and restoration.

Prelude

In the New Testament, Psalm 110 is one of the most frequently quoted portions of the Old Testament. The reason for its popularity among Christians has to do with the strong messianic themes throughout the psalm. In its description of a future king in the line of David, Psalm 110 foreshadows in a powerful way the coming of God’s Messiah, the one who will usher in the kingdom of God.

Today’s prayer is inspired by a verse in Psalm 110 that testifies to the willingness of the people of Israel to join their future king in his mission. Through our daily work, we are also able to join Jesus, King of kings and Lord of lords, in his mission in the world. We give ourselves to him as we work, seeking to honor the Lord in all we do.

Pray

Gracious God, today I am inspired by the vision in Psalm 110 of your people offering themselves willingly to the messianic king. That’s what I want to do, though my context is quite different, of course. I may not be joining you in some military conquest, but I am blessed to join you in your creating, nurturing, saving, redeeming, and restoring work in the world.

So, today I offer myself willingly and joyfully to you and your mission. Even as I do my “ordinary” work today, I give both my work and myself to you. Be glorified, O God, in what I do and how I do it. May I steward well all the gifts and opportunities you have entrusted to me. Amen.

Ponder Throughout the Day

Offer yourself willingly to the Lord as you work today.
