Scripture Reading: Psalm 65:9-11 (NRSV)

You visit the earth and water it,
+++you greatly enrich it;
the river of God is full of water;
+++you provide the people with grain,
+++for so you have prepared it.
You water its furrows abundantly,
+++settling its ridges,
softening it with showers,
+++and blessing its growth.
You crown the year with your bounty;
+++your wagon tracks overflow with richness.

Focus

We often pray for God’s help when our work is not going well. But what about when things are great at work? When our efforts are being blessed? It’s easy in those times to forget the Lord’s bounty, to think that we’ve made it all happen ourselves. Psalm 65:9-11 models for us a prayer that recognizes and honors God’s blessing of work, in this particular case, the work of farming. We encouraged to thank the Lord for all he does to bless our work, enabling us to prosper.

Prayer

Gracious God, things are going so well at work these days. It’s one of those special times when everything seems to be working in sync. I feel as if my work really makes a difference and is bearing fruit. So encouraging!

Lord, you know that I’ve worked hard. I’ve contributed to the fruitfulness of my work, for sure. But today I remember that, behind my effort lies your unmatched provision. A farmer toils for a harvest, but there is no bounty unless you water the earth with rain. We can fill our wagons with overflowing produce, but none of it happens apart from your blessing.

So, in this season of plenty, I recognize you and your grace. I thank you for making it possible for my work to flourish. For all you to do help me in my labors – much of which I never even perceive – I give you thanks and praise.

God of all blessings, I bless you in response, giving you the glory you deserve. Amen.

Ponder Throughout the Day

When things are going well at work, God makes your flourishing possible.
